Make something truly special.
Kiridashi knives are Japanese tools suitable for various craft and cutting tasks.
This workshop offers the opportunity to learn how to create a high-quality and elegant knife with your own hands, using both traditional and modern techniques.
The workshop lasts about one working day, but can be split into two evenings. Up to two people can participate in one session. Participation fee is €145 per person (with sheath making included: €165).
Registration and questions: info@hephaistoslab.eu
Workshop steps:
1. MATERIAL SELECTION AND PREPARATION
Participants will learn about the properties of steel and metals, such as carbon steel and Damascus steel. The workshop begins with an introduction to how Damascus steel is made, and if there is interest, the organizer can also demonstrate the process. Each participant will receive a pre-made piece of Damascus steel, enough to make one knife. Safety instructions for working in the forge are also covered.
2. FORGING AND SHAPING THE BLADE
Participants heat the metal in a forge to high temperatures (800–1000°C) and then forge the blade, giving it its characteristic shape. Kiridashi knives typically have a single bevel edge, and the precise shaping continues in the grinding stage.
3. HEAT TREATMENT
To ensure the strength and durability of the blade:
-
The blade is heated and cooled in air to relieve stress.
-
Then it is heated again and quenched in oil to achieve maximum hardness.
-
Finally, it is tempered at a lower temperature to reduce brittleness.
4. GRINDING
The blade surface is finished by grinding it smooth, and the edge is ground sharp and even.
5. ETCHING
The blade is treated in a solution to bring out the Damascus patterns. After etching, the blade is cleaned and polished to create a beautiful contrast and surface.
6. SHARPENING
The blade is finally sharpened with waterstones to achieve maximum sharpness.
7. MAKING THE SHEATH
The workshop ends with making a vegetable-tanned leather sheath that protects the blade and makes it easy to carry.
